When it comes to fabrics for babywear cotton is the common option because it is breathable and durable as well as absorbent. However not all cottons are created equal and there are wide ranging differences between conventionally produced cotton and organic cotton. Organic cotton is far less common than chemically treated conventional cotton largely because of the difficulty in growing it. Here at Darlo we love organic cotton but we aren’t too keen on conventional cotton, in fact we never use it in our production! We personally think that organic cotton feels more comfortable on skin, which is obviously important when dressing your little one, but this is only one part of the story.
The Organic Trade Association state that cotton covers 2.5% of the world’s cultivated land but uses 16% of the world’s insecticides, herbicides and pesticides – more than any other major crop! The problem with this is that these chemicals pollute the air and contaminate local water supplies inevitably causing wide-ranging health problems to local communities. Further the pollutants ruin other crops meaning farmers are not able to be self-sustaining.
By choosing organic cotton products we can really make a difference to the lives of the farmers. Not only that but we get a super soft, chemical free, product too!
For every Darlo organic cotton comfy sold we will provide a week’s worth of meals for a child in India.
At Darlo we strive to be kind on your baby's skin and kind to others.
